When I turned my comptuer on this morning, my taskbar was gone.   I went to Run > explorer.  exe to see if I could start it from there, but it didn't work.   I looked all over the internet today trying to find a solution.

Microsoft Support
Microsoft.  com said that I should boot in safe mode and try from there.   It also recommended that I create a new user account.   The user account page never loads for me.   I tried logging in as an administrator but it said a restriction was placed on my account, I have no idea what this means since I am the only user on this computer.

Taskbar Plus
I tried the Taskbar Repair Tool but it gave me some error about the "remote server machine is unavailabe or does not exist"

I have already tried using registry backups from last week.   System restore will not open.

It is not a virus or spyware, I ran a complete virus and spyware scan on friday with no threats found and a complete scan today with no threats found.

On top of all my other problems, the clipboard doesn't work, I cannont write files to cds, and all my sound card drivers are missing.

I am near the end of my rope trying to fix this pc, I need it for school.   I put in the windows install cd that came with my pc, and checked out the non-destructive reinstall option.   It said that it saves all my personal files and documents but that all my programs will be erased.   I dont have the original cds for a lot of my programs and would like to avoid this option for as long as possible.

Will getting a new hard drive, just to install windows on, solve the problem? As long as windows works on the new cd, i should be able to transfer all my files over, right?

I already tried the fixes given at kgiii. info

Let's start with the basics. Follow this process here to create a new user account:

Gł - Windows > XP + General: Corrupt Profile:
Gł - Windows > XP + General: Corrupt Profile

Getting a new drive and installing an OS on it would help you get your files back but that may not be the problem at all. Try a new profile first and see if that does the trick for you and we can run from there. Make sure to follow the steps exactly. Just so you know you can open the control panel (hopefully) by using the "control" run prompt or you can get there directly by running "control userpasswords" if you would like.

ok, so I cannont create a new account off of control panel > user accounts, but I did manage to make one through run > control userpasswords2.  It also had the same taskbar-missing problem.

I cannot paste anything either, ctrl+C/crtl+V do not work, edit > paste does not work, drag and drop do not work.  I tried the xcopy and the copy commands in the cmd prompt but it gave me a "Sharing Violation" error when I tried to move my documents.

My computer won't boot into safe mode.  Each time I try it restarts and gives the message "Windows did not start successfully" I already tried selecting safe mode from there but that didn't work.

I got a new harddrive yesterday.  I removed the original and installed the new one.  I put in the recovery disk that came with my computer.  It formatted the new disk and installed windows.  However, the few little intro screens that come up (e. g.  what time zone are you in, what region do you live in), my computer freezes at the "Name your computer" screen.  If i click next or skip, it stays at that screen and does not make any progress.  I left my computer on overnight to see if it was just slow but that didnt solve it.  Ive tried it connected and not connected to the internet and tried various different names.  I'm really at a dead end here.

I ended up getting a nicely priced ($20 student discount) version of xp pro.  Installed that on the new hard drive, still able to access backed up files on the old hard drive.  Not all is lost.  Thanks for trying to help though!
