Having gotten my brand new computer for myself for Christmas, I got all smart-alecy and started helping MY mom with her machine using Windows Messenger and remote desktop.    As it is a pretty old laptop she has, and I am not QUITE the pro I used to be. . (well the smartest kid on the block. . .  and a tiny block it is. . . ) I used to use netmeeting on 98 all the time.   I got into her machine and started fixing her uploads to photobucket and it was a piece of cake.
THEN I turned it back to her.   And her keyboard went nuts. . . .
To quote her first IM when it came back "d5d 5 d6 s60eth5ng wr6ng+ Which we translated to Did I do something wrong?.
Not her. . .  me. . . .  we are doing a restore point and as she says this has happened before, what the heck do we have to do to NOT have to replace the whole configuration whenever I use the remote desktop.

I LOVE invading people's machines, but they won't let me if this sort of thing keeps going on. . .
gracias on your help.

Well now...

That's not typical. Did restore work? If it didn't then... Hmm... My next step would be to remove the keyboard drivers and reboot letting the OS install them again.

Yes, restore worked.  This is the second time.

I was in a chat here (like I said, I like this site!!!) and we think it is possible that since her machine is a laptop, next time we will try numlock and see if that fixes it.  As there are multi-use keys on a laptop and Mom is 200 miles across the desert, I can't see what she actually did, but we have a pact.  She will set a restore point next time we try anything and if it happens again, we will try that numlock and see if it fixes it before she has to start from scratch.  (did she effectively uninstall my windows messenger?)

And... while I am messing with other computers remotely... I can use yahoo messenger and we talked while I was invading her cyberspace, but my netmeeting or whatever it is this generation, did not ever connect for voice with her.  Is that a possible firewall and microsoft thing?  I mean we work fine on yahoo, but way in my youth, I remember this OSCAR thing that we had to sign into.  Is that part of the remote assistance thing?

If you MUST use a Microsoft product for this then Remote Desktop isn't too bad. I would recommend something like RealVNC or any other VNC product that you could have her install, use only when it is needed, password protect, etc. Simply only use it when it is needed and then disable it when it is not needed.

More information can be found here.
