Im running Apache, PHP, MYsql, and Phpmyadmin.

Id like to have some form of hosting for people, but I need something like cPanel. But cPanel is for Linux only, and they dont have a windows version. So Im wondering, how do I get something like that?

Also, how would I get domain names, other then purchase them from someone else, because I need to offer domains as well.
Im mainly asking KGIII since he knows the most, seeing as he runs http://whathostingshould.be

Gotta buy domain names. www.registerfly.com (Reseller program, I'm pretty sure.) Otherwise you can invest an arm and a leg and get a merchant account.

Helm is of no help. XP isnt supported. I might try linux again. Probably Ubuntu. I liked that best.
Although, I did try running my server on several linux distros. I cant get it to read my site from my external drive. It reads the drive. It exists, but when I try to link to it from httpd.conf, it doesnt work.

Hmm... I forget the method but look for the method to actually set it as a networked drive - IF you go with Linux.

I seem to recall that was the method. Anyhow - there are a few control panels for Windows. Not so many though.

And, really. *chuckles* It's a lot like work and accountablity when people want their site online all the time.

Um, Im expecting to keep servers up 24/7. Mine is.
Im actually emailing back and forth, the guy who built Helm.

LOL 24/7 is impossible. That's the problem - people think it isn't difficult or that it actually can be done. Even with a clustered solution - can't be done.

Well the only downtime I have ever had with my server at home here, is network issues. Which isnt my fault, or anything I cuased.

That's usually one of the most frequent cause of downtime - even with multi-homed top-tier upstream providers with sheathed and buried cable running in from both ends of the data center. And yet, people will still expect 24/7. The "five nines" is what a lot of companies promise; Generally it's not true or the terms of service are very cleverly worded or it is VERY expensive.

It seems inevitable that at some point some complete and utter meatstick will come along and hit the cable with a backhoe at what happens to be the same day the switches at the other end of the building decide it is time to go belly up. And yet, people expect 24/7 with 100% uptime for cheap with unlimited disk space and bandwidth. (I've not been able to buy unlimibyte disks yet and no contracts that I've seen provision truly unlimited bandwidth, after all only so much data can be pushed through a line at one time but I digress...)

So, unless you have the patience of a saint? Run away! *grins* It is fun though, it's quite a learning curve for some of the more in-depth stuff as well.

By the way, your stack isn't that uncommon any more. WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL and PHP/Perl) is gaining ground. This particular server that houses the site and forum is a LAMP stack using CentOS, there's a Kubuntu - I think that's the name - build that is an Ubuntu build that is optimized for server use if you do opt to revisit Linux. If it runs on Windows, it it suits your needs, and if it provides an interface that you're comfortable working in - why change it? Just my own view... I'm not very OS-specific with that sort of thing, pick what works for you and run with it.

Hosting is very difficult indeed .  I would suggest getting into a partnership these days (I have been looking around for a partner company too) .  That way you can share the workload etc .

Competing with the unlimited hosts is a absolute nightmare .  So much to say we don't bother competing with them .  We just tell our clients the truth .  There is no such thing as unlimited .

Pick a stable, reliable OS and more importantly one you can work with and is secure .  I personally prefer centOS .

Let us know how ya get on in the business though

I agree! Next year we are looking into giving clients a choice of the two .
