Yeah, thats right. FOR FREE!

http://www.domain...oon.com/index.php

Its legit, but it takes a bit. Hehe, rhyming.
Ok so, this site, you have to complete several surveys to get a free domain name, it has to add up to 8 points.
After you get 8 points, you qualify for a domain name. The only downside is, its forwarding domains.
Which means, you register a domain name, and it takes the domain name, it forwards it to your actual site.
For example, my sites direct link is utserver.sytes.net. Or, utserver.servehttp.com. Either way.
Now, the way they have this set up, is that you have to enter in a direct link or ip to your site. For this example, well use 99.99.99.99 as a direct link ip to a web site.
When a user puts in the domain you got into a browser, it will redirect that user to 99.99.99.99. Or, if you have the domain name masked, it wont show the ip, but it wont show the current page you are on now.

I don't like that, so, after xmas, I'm going to be transferring it to Network Solutions.

And who said you cant get a full-fledged site 100% free? Wink
Proof I got a domain name free: www.utechnet.com
-I don't mean this post in a spamfull way. If you take it as spam and are offended, I'll remove it.-

I wouldn't consider this spam, as you are one of us and have explained it quite well.

I'm just wondering if it needs to be moved?

I've got a domain name, however, I know lots of folks who would love a free one! Thanks. Smiley

As a domain name it is pretty limited if you can't control the DNS entries or MX entries. However, for those of you who are interested in figuring out how to make it work with real hosting services see:

http://www.zoneedit.com

It has traffic limitations that most sites won't even begin to come close to passing and a limit of just five as near as I recall. Setting it up might be a bit complicated for that to work with a server that checks for nameserver entries but not entirely impossible. With that you could setup MX, CNAME, and A records so you could possibly get it to work. If it is possible to get it to work then it is possible to do it with ZoneEdit - it just might not be easy.

That should likely go up, the link, into a different section. Albeit not our normal topic it might suit better in the web resources section. I'll poke it.

Ah - and I'd like to add that if one's site is to be in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM a business you will want to ensure that true ownership (not ownership on behalf of) of the domain name belongs squarely in your hands or a very well regarded hosting company. I wouldn't even recommend it in the hands of most hosting companies.

This is worth mentioning because if you don't own the domain name, have full and total access including the capacity to transfer it to another registrar then at any point the actual owners can take control over it leaving you with both the burden of proof and the cost of the process for arbitration.

I don't know? Their site says something entirely different...

http://www.domainlagoon.com/faq.php

According to them you get "full control" and that would imply, in my humble opinion, the ability to edit nameservers, create fully qualified name servers, edit and create MX records or the likes.

Hmm... So, in typical investigative journalism fashion we'll... Err... Investigate.

(More information to follow as well as the varied successes we have.)

Alright, it seems to work like a champ. (Though it wasn't me who went through getting all the surveys completed. Thanks goes to Femlow for that.)

You can modify nameservers and create fully qualified nameservers based on IP addresses there. Thanks Element, perhaps more to come.

LOL Trying to make up for losses? It looks like someone already has but I'll give you some. I'm not scared... "I ain't never skurred..."

(And no, if being as cool as you means drooling on myself and spasms that caused me to poke my eye out with sharp items then, no... Just no...) Wink

Though if I were to grow up to be an element I think I'd pick carbon.

Ah - and by the way... They lie about that whole "twenty minutes" thing. I've now gone through the process to see how well it worked and oh my...

Don't use anything but a .com email address. Wow... Evil, evil, evil...
Don't use a primary email address. (Of course but, well, someone might be new.)
Don't expect it to be done quickly or to be done quickly.
Read the list of the requirements prior to clicking - it will make it easier.
Don't try to scam them, at least I don't think so. They seem to check it manually.

As for the last one, well, it doesn't appear as if they do such a good job. At one point one of them wouldn't take the .be address... So I just used a .com address from Hotmail. That same one wouldn't let me use my address, claimed it was a business? (Of all the absurd things I've ever seen.)

It is do-able I suppose. I imagine that it is full featured too because they transfer you to a different company at that point. It looks like they're a pretty straight eNom reseller so you could transfer it out to a less expensive registar next year if you wanted. I'm not sure if they'll let you answer the questions/surveys all over again for the next year but who knows? We'll have to leave this thread open and see what the results are. I'll pin it as a sticky. Maybe it will help someone.

Oh, and no, they do not transfer you to a diffrent company. Dieztal or whatever the name is, owns both of those sites.
Yes they do check them manually once you are finished with the all the surveys to add up to at least 8 points. Personally, Id create a new email address when you do this, one you will never use again, because there is ALOT of spam in your email after.

I just used a special spam address that, by default, gets everything deleted automatically.

(if qwerty1234567zxcvby987654321 is not in the senders address delete, stop processing message rules)

When I want something out of that inbox I turn the rule off. Wink

Well, I changed the name servers to zoneedits nameservers. I dont see much of a point for that. It doesnt let me change the one thing Id like to. When you visit utechnet.com, it redirects you to utserver.sytes.net, my direct domain name. Id like utechnet.com to be a solid, direct domain name but, I guess thats not possible with this company. I guess Ill just have to transfer, eh, not too bad. Less then 10$

You'll need to setup ZoneEdit to act as your nameservers. From there you need to setup ZoneEdit to respond to your dynamic IP address. How? Not sure - but surely do-able. There may be some ZE issues as they had DDOS attacks recently but, really, if you can do it it can be done with ZE. It is NOT easy and requires that you study/read but you can do it. Wink

I've done it in the past so I'm 100% sure you still can as ZE doesn't usually take away features but rather adds them. Hmm... It's been a billion and ten years it feels like but you /should/ be able to find out how in their help/FAQs.
