You know, I *almost* put Arthur Dent, but I've always sort of thought of him as an anti-hero. Same with Han Solo. Although, maybe they're reluctant heroes?

In my opinion, a good anti-hero should be kind of a bad guy, or atleast someone who is in it for their own good and only occasionally shows any underlying humanity. Han Solo may have qualified at first I guess, but definately lost the anti to his hero by the last movie... I dont really think Arthur Dent would qualify though... atleast not in my mind.

Actually, an anti-hero is someone who is not a very good hero, but put into circumstances wherein he or she must perform heroic acts, but does so ineffectually.

If you go by that definition, then Arthur Dent fits in perfectly. Han Solo starts out as a True Neutral (if you're into D&D), but then goes all heroic in the end. I still think he's somewhat reluctant to the end, but I do agree with you that his "hero" won out over the anti.

Your wikilink doesn't work. And, as stated on wikipedia, they perform "acts generally deemed "heroic," but will do so with methods, manners, or intentions that may not be heroic." Heroism is not so much about effectiveness as it is about the courage, nobility and self-sacrifice that they exhibit (see merriam-webster). Thus an anti-hero would be someone who is cowardly, lowly and selfish who just happens to perform heroic feats every now and again, generally in between extended non-heroic feats. While Arthur Dent may not be the most heroic of heros, generally his intentions are good and he tries his best.

Well, I have no idea why the wiki mod isn't working, but the definition does exist in the wikipedia. I fixed it so the link will work, but was unable to make it work with the wiki tag.

I still tend to lean on the side of the definition of a hapless and ineffectual individual who performs sometimes heroic acts that may or may not work. *shrugs* There are so many variations of "anti-hero" definition.
