I really should stop watching all of the director cuts and commentaries... *sighs* I picked those specifically 'cause (while he may only be billed as the a writer or producer - see initial comment) he was quite active in a directing role in 'em. It is my fault entirely for being... Greedy? I guess that is the term. I figure I have just paid for a movie, buggered if I am not going to watch all the special features. No, anal is a better term. I will watch a movie, then re-watch it with the director's comments, then watch the making of it, then watch the alternate endings, and finally check out the bonus features.

I'm not sure if that is greedy or anal retentive. I'll leave it to others to decide. Either way, I am pretty sure it isn't normal or even good. Then again, it might be? Else they wouldn't put all that stuff on the DVD.

Another bit of odd trivia for you: Stephen King actually is very active in directing most of the movies that has written. (More common would be that he actually appears in most of them - I think there are a couple he doesn't have a cameo in though.) He doesn't get billed as the director in any of them though as far as I recall. Though he does get billed as a producer on a number of the "movies" though I think they were all "Made for TV" movies or something like that.

On second thought - no, I've decided it is anal.

Well... I wouldn't call it greedy. And if anal and OCD are the same thing, then yes. Anal it is.

Ah... I don't usually watch the commentary unless the cast is in on it. Unless, of course, it's my SciFi series on DVD, then I definitely watch with commentary turned on.

I'm all about the "making of" and other bonus features. I want to know everything about the movie if I deemed to buy it.

I usually find that the Director's Cuts are the better versions of a movie. Legend is a GREAT example of that. The music is completely different, which changes the mood of the whole movie.

I think that falls into the anal category...

Depending on the movie and type of movie, I generally prefer not to know how it was made and rarely care about the other bonus material (except deleted scenes... I like those for the most part). I like most (or atleast many) movies for the stories and dont want to see the actors being actors and not characters, and complaining about being cold or how many times they shot a scene or whatever it is... That being said, I recently obtained a copy of Pitch Black on DVD, and have watched every possible bonus material there was to watch (I was very disappointed that it didn't have deleted scenes), as well as the entire movie with commentary....

How can you not like:

Platoon
The Doors
Natural Born Killers
Born on the Fourth of July
Evita
Scarface
Conan The Barbarian (Okay - so that one really shouldn't be liked but somehow must be. )
The People vs.  Larry Flint
The Joy Luck Club
etc?

All of which he's had a very active hand in (though in some he is credited with everything from producer to writer) and all of which are fantastic.

Agreed. . .   Oliver Stone makes movies that grab you by the sack and make you smell and taste the film.

Platoon - Best War Movie Ever
The Doors - Best Autobiographical Film Ever

Quentin Tarentino has moments of greatness sandwiched with crap.  You have to like Pulp Fiction as one of the all time best scripts and action flicks.  Kill Bill 1 and 2 are also visually stunning.

The Kill Bill series was, while certainly meriting respect for their large budget, really pretty silly and pointless in my opinion. To me it was just another hyped series of special effects. Pulp Fiction... What a grand movie in my opinion. I think Travolta and Jackson should do more movies together, as soon as they get done being old.

Side note: Somehow I think I missed Wes Craven who, while not the best, certainly was fantastic in his genre.
