I am looking for a laptop or two, and I came across one that has an "8X DVD-Super Multi double layer drive" which sounds very fancy indeed but what is it? Or more specifically what can it do? Mostly I would like to know concerning burning CDs/DVDs etc...

Thanks,
fem

Dual layer simply means that it has the capacity to read DVD-9 (dual layer DVDs which hold a theoretical limit of about 9 GB) and unless it specifically states that it "writes" DVDs then it probably doesn't.

Your quote:

Quote
"8X DVD-Super Multi double layer drive"

Means that it reads DVDs at 8x and that it can (like any other DVD player on the block) read DVD-9 formatted disks. Else it would have had an R/W (and big bright letters saying it could) to indicate that it can read/write.

HOWEVER...

Wink

It gets picky here...

IF THE BRAND is LG and the letters are CAPITALIZED then it is a trademarked phrase that means that it can read AND write in CD, DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD-RAM formats...

However... If it is NOT LG and it is NOT capitalized or if it hyphenated, etc... You're never really sure without contacting the vendor and/or without having a specific SKU or model to research.

If you would like to tell us what the goal of the laptops is, what they will be used for, and what the price mark is you might find you get a good recommendation or two.

For instance you can get a big-box-store Acer with 1 GB of RAM, an AMD64 dual core CPU, and DVD R/W for dirt cheap. As the quantity is just two that is probably one of the better options but without knowing the real requirements (such as what the reasons are they'd need to write a DVD) recommendations would be silly. More silly considering you can pick up an OEM lappy for about 500 bucks that, depending on your needs, will likely serve for years to come.

They really don't need anything too fancy. It needs to be wireless capable, have a decent sized hdd, be able to write cd's (DVD is not necessary), and be able to run a few relatively high resource using programs at the same time at a decent speed. Needs to have XP of some sort too I suppose to make things easier, but that's probably not too much of a problem since most things do. And it needs to have USB ports... And they can spend up to a thousand for each computer (they only really want one right now, but a second one not too far into the future). I was looking at something like http://www.compus...oduct_code=342116

With those specs in mind give me a few (later tonight or tomorrow) I will provide you with a decent choice at somewhere a bit over half the cost they have set. Wink

Does it need to be ordered online, picked up locally, or?

Ordered online is best.

Also, warranty is good in case it breaks...

I do not like to bash companies. I highly recommend most any other place online (or off for that matter) than that particular company you linked to. HIGHLY recommend it.

(There are some acceptable lappies at Wal-Mart actually. Some of them down around 550 bucks.)

Some links:

Good price:
http://www.tigerd...8796&CatId=17

Decent sized monitor:
http://www.tigerd...3745&CatId=17

I think you'll find a 14.1 inch screen is not acceptable and while they might use it without complaint the eye strain will make 'em secretly want to kill you with a stick.

If you're going to be ordering quickly then a look in the overstock bin is always worth it...

While I suppose the monitor would be annoying to some, the person who will be using one of them has a lappy with that size monitor already and as such is adjusted to those things... and even if they do want to kill me with a stick, it'd have to be a really big stick to reach all the way here...

The second link is pretty close to the one CompUSA had (except not really, they were out of stock and just lying about it), but its less memory and a smaller hard drive for the same amount of money... but it will probably work well enough. It would seem that the Acer Aspire 5050 is out of stock everywhere I've been able to find it which is a bummer. I will show them and see what they think.

Thanks for you help.

The second link is not much at all like the first?

Tiger direct:                          CompUSA:
RAM speed faster                    More RAM but slower
nVidia                                   ATI
Decent Size Monitor                Itty bitty critter
Heavier (more solid)                Itty bitty critter
Faster CPU                            Slower CPU
Larger Keyboard                      Itty bitty critter
Smaller HDD                           Larger HDD
No DVD-RAM                          DVD RAM

(I don't see much similarity?) The memory is adequate (more than needed really) and the space is far more than should EVER be needed on a business laptop. The cost savings for the screen size justify the lesser RAM. The faster CPU and higher RAM speed make a great deal of difference and will actually make benchmarking results probably higher with the one from TigerDirect. nVidia typically is more stable than ATI though with AMD owning ATI now I may take another look at ATI's offerings though not until March when I, once again, replace my hardware.

Personally, if I were to recommend a laptop for business use, I would either go really low-end or very high end. The Panasonic hardened and semi-hardened offerings are fantastic but costly. The low-end offerings are so inexpensive that it isn't a major hit when it is inevitably stolen or lost.
