Wi-Fi Signal Strength

Where I live, we have a Wi-Fi connection that is accessible throughout most of the house, though not all of it. However one of the places where I have always been able to get a decent connection is in my room upstairs, until this afternoon. For some reason, the signal strength is showing up too weak to connect when I am up there. I can connect fine if I am downstairs next to the box itself (as I am at the moment), which of course shows a good strong signal strength. There are no new physical baririers in the building, and I've reset all the equipment, but to no avail. So, I am wondering if there is any other reason this might be happening?

Where is the wi-fi transmitter and how far away is it recieving once you lose signal strength?

Also, an issue that comes around alot where I work. There could be aluminum foil inside the walls/floor. Or some type of foil. We've actually tested this with not only wireless but cell phones too. Try bringing a cell phone upstairs, and compare the reception to downstairs, where you would normally get the highest signal strength.

In addition, factors such as weather, interference from other wireless devices that fail to remain in their allowed spectrum (cheap cordless phones have been known to do so as can bluetooth), antenna movement, etc...

I suppose that you're not going to go out and buy a tester but they make a nice inexpensive USB device that tests signal quality even while it isn't connected. As a bonus it also functions as a wifi connection.

Its hard to say just how far away I could get a signal, as you cant really go one direction for terribly long without running into things (like brick walls). The thing about there being metal in the walls is that it worked before and they havent torn up or replaced the floors since I got here, so I dont think that would be it... My cell phone works throughout the entire building.

I suppose that it could be the weather? I'm not sure what wireless deviced would have been added except there is a new wi-fi connection that I can get when I am downstairs from some neighbor, but I don't know long its been there.

But, good but weird news, it spontenteously fixed itself, like so many other things seem to. I dont know why, and while I'm glad its better I'm annoyed that I dont know why it happened or how to fix it if it happens again. This place is frustrating sometimes, but atleast I found all the light switches finally...

It could just have needed to be reset, or it just needed time. Either way, it's fixed.
